Epee Club Cup

Dear member,

I bring you an update on yesterday’s Epée Club Cup.

The Epée Club Cup was held yesterday at the Leon Paul Fencing Centre.  Despite a large number of last-minute withdrawals we had a total of 34 of 36 fencers on the day.

This was the first year we have had prize money for the competition, thanks to the CIO, and after all 5 rounds of the initial pools were completed – 272 fights in all – and about a 5th of these (21%) were decided either by 1 hit or on time.

The top 4 fencers from each group were promoted through to Direct Elimination.  Three of the promoted fencers were Club members – Greg Allen, Phil Barbasiewicz and Neal Mallett – with Greg losing a closely contested final to the winner, Will East.

The prize for third place went to James Russell, with Leonora MacKinnon the best female fencer and Greg also picking up the prize for best veteran.

I’d like to say a big “thank you” to all those who refereed on the day – particularly Malcom Allton, Pat Casey and Howard West – as well as to Jon Willis for allowing us to use the fabulous venue and also the President, for keeping me calm and supplying me with coffee!

Al
