Angus McKenzie 1936 - 2022
The EC is saddened to learn of the death of club member Angus McKenzie (86).
“I am sad to tell you that Dad passed away on Sunday 25 September. As you may be aware, in recent years, he had dealt valiantly with a range of increasingly debilitating conditions, and sadly, a simple fall proved too much. You'll appreciate as much as I do that fencing was a cornerstone of Dad's life from a formative age, and I'd like to thank you for keeping in touch with him; I know this involvement with the club brought him a lot of joy and as well as unmissable chances to reminisce!” David McKenzie
Angus was primarily a foilist and fenced for St Pauls School, later going on to become a pupil of Prof Reggie Behmber in London during the 60s. His main achievements were:*
1951 St Pauls – Public School Championships Junior Foil Champion
1953 St Pauls – Public School Championships Foil Champion
1956 AFA Junior Epee Championships – 1st
1957 AFA Junior Foil Championships (Doyne Memorial Cup) – 3rd
1958 AFA Coronation Cup (International) Foil – 3rd
1961 AFA Men’s Foil Championships – 3rd
1963 AFA Men’s Foil Championships – 2nd
Angus was a member of the Great Britain foil team at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.
* (Modern British Fencing 1964 – 1981):
“McKenzie was mainly a foilist, although he did win the Junior Epee title in 1956, distinguished by fluid compound attacks. He was runner-up in the 1963 foil championship final of four, beating Mike Price and Rene Paul, but losing to Allan Jay, who went on to win his only British foil title (he was to be runner-up five times).” Malcolm Fare
“A classic, left handed foilist and a perfect gentleman on the piste.” Peter Jacobs
