Report - GB Senior Women’s Epee in Tallin

Ian Lichfield.

Last weekend the Senior Women’s Epee Squad competed in the Tallin World Cup. In a field of 243, this was a tough competition, being the first international for all the fencers after the Covid break, tensions and nerves were high with the best result Susan Sica finishing 82nd. Everyone was happy to be back competing and look forward to the next event.
The team event on the Sunday was rife with excitement and nerves, as the team have not competed for a while and were welcoming a new member, Louise Sadler. In the draw their first bout was to be against number 16 seed, Romania. The team decided to employ a new tactic, as they had not yet worked together competitively, with the starting line-up Smith Taylor, Sadler, Sica with Lawson reserve. This decision was based on the previous day’s pools. Throughout their fights the GB women were within a couple of hits of their opponents, but the strength of the Romanian team meant they slowly pulled away in the last few matches. Unfortunately for the GB ladies, despite their best efforts to pull back the win, it was out of their grasp this time. The bout finished 45-32 to Romania finishing in 20th place, earning 8 more international points.
The team would like to say a huge thank you to the Epée club for their support in this event, without it their progression and development would not be possible.

Yours sincerely

Danielle Lawson, Louise Sadler, Susan Sica & Katrina Smith Taylor
